Payment plan

What does Payment plan mean on a medical bill?

A payment plan spreads a balance over months instead of changing it. Hospital plans are often interest-free and stay with the hospital. The other kind is a medical credit card or loan offered at the desk: a third party pays the hospital, you now owe the lender, and interest can apply once a promotional period ends. The two look similar on the form and behave very differently later, so the question worth asking before signing is who holds the balance afterward.

What does Payment plan usually cost?

A plan divides the amount; it does not reduce it. Financial assistance and self-pay pricing change the amount itself, which is why they are worth settling before you agree to a schedule.

What should I watch out for with Payment plan?

  • Ask whether the plan is with the hospital or with an outside lender, since the terms differ
  • Ask what happens to the balance and the interest if you miss a single payment
  • Ask about financial assistance before signing, because a plan usually locks in the full amount
