Denial code PR-1

What does Denial code PR-1 mean on a medical bill?

PR-1 is the part of the allowed amount that went toward your deductible, the covered care you pay yourself before the plan starts paying its share. The PR letters mean the plan is pointing this amount at you, so it should show up on the provider's bill. The number is only as good as the plan's running total, and that total slips more often than people expect: claims processed out of order, care from another provider not counted yet, or a family total tracked apart from yours.

What should I watch out for with Denial code PR-1?

  • Compare the PR-1 amount against the deductible tracker in your plan's member portal for the same date
  • Ask your plan how much of your deductible was already met when it processed this claim
  • Ask the billing office to bill only what the EOB shows on the PR-1 line and nothing above it
